Spike TV presents Blade the series

I wanted to speak on the new Spike channel television program Blade the series. For the most part I liked it. It had a nice dark feel to most of the scenes and a decent pace. I love the fact that there are more than just a few characters that are Black African American, American Indian, Asian and more. Diversity in any program is a benefit, it adds to the atmosphere and depth of the characters. In the better programs it breathes an essence of reality and intensity I feel. Like in the world, the differences make the whole better than before.

Beyond the overall look of the cast, the settings are nice. Gritty and no too artificial looking. Most seem like the real interiors of buildings, with just the right touch of decay. The lighting as well adds to the general morose feel of the ongoings. I love some of the outfits that some of the characters, especially the women, have. A nice Gibson-esque cyperpunk feel to it.

Actually I see a lot of homages and elements of other great storylines. Besides the cyberpunk feel, there are elements of Vampire: The Masquerade, Buffy the Vampire - the series, and Angel. There is even a reference to possibly an old independent comic book (forgot the name but the characters had gold symbiotes and were former military) or the Underworld movies. These can be seen in the structure and manipulation of the vampire clans, the understanding that other forces may exist, like lycans - werewolves, and that they don’t like the vampires at all. The abilities of the vampires is also taken from many places. I like the combinations and potential.

I can only hope they delve deeper into what the vampires can do, how different all the clans are. Not just in how they create new members, but the abilities they specialize in. Maybe bringing in the Nosferatu. That would be interesting. I’d love to see a strong storyline on the lycans (short for lycanthrope). Would Blade be more or less inclined to take their help? Are they the enemy of his enemy and thus his friend, or another enemy? Do they age? How much power do they have? And who else is out there? Magicians of various sorts? There can be a lot of potential, and many of these can play both for and against each other. A blend of naturally existing checks and balances that Blade can affect in large scale. And what plans are out there, started centuries ago with decades to go before their fruition.

These are all things that can be explored, and the introduction of this series hints at tackling many of them. The writing is at times smart, and at times flat. I think that so far the vampires, Marcus in particular, have had the best lines. Blade has had some of the worst. Krista looks to be a wildcard and one of my early favorites. As Blade said, “it can go either way” in regards to her.

The acting though is harder to get a feel of. I think the look of the various cast members is fine. The actor portraying Blade, Mr. Kirk “Sticky” Jones, does have some of the look of Mr. Wesley Snipes. He seems uncomfortable in the role though. Blade may be detached and reserved, but he is also intense. Mr. Jones did well in Over There, a show that I think did not get the attention and recognition it deserved [it is too soon for its time I think] and in the Shield, but seems wooden here. He moves with a stiffness and his lines seem like he is trying too hard to deliver the hard edge that is Blade as done by Mr. Snipes. As the show progresses I hope he makes the character his own and reaches a comfort level.

Marcus, as portrayed by Mr. Neil Jackson, does stand out well. Very suave and emanating a feel of sophistication and worldliness. This character should be around for a while, and I think can give a lot of depth to the vampires and their long-term goals.

I should mention that I think Mr. Jones has done well in a couple of roles. It seems that, for me, he does best in roles that are closest to his rap origins. I do give him credit, unlike many he has actually tried several roles in movies and television. He has worked to be a true actor, and while he is far from a star he is improving. Given time I think he is capable of really breaking out in this television series. He may not be on the level of LL Cool J or Queen Latifah, but he is leaps and bounds above many other rapper-wanna-be-actors.

Overall I like the program. I’m looking forward to seeing the story and acting develop. This could be a winner, as long as you don’t expect to only get what the movies did. There is the promise of more, and that is maybe the best thing so far.

Red cards, sportsmanship and ice fetish

Ok, there are a few World Cup matches I want to speak on. First, I hear that Mr. Bruce Arena left the field in the last USA match without shaking hands with the Ghanian head coach or waiting for the US team to leave the pitch. Now I hope this isn’t true. If it is, then it’s perhaps one of the worst examples of poor sportsmanship I’ve heard in some time. It’s bad enough he spent the game sitting down and looking dejected. His poor choices in team selection and substitutions I’ve mentioned before. But this would be a high insult, to the team, Ghana and soccer in general. Please someone tell me it’s not true. IF it is, that’s just one more reason for this World Cup to be Mr. Bruce Arena’s last.

And speaking of poor sportsmanship what was going on in that Netherlands vs. Portugal game? I have never seen such a out of control game. The referee lost control early in the game. The fact that FIFA thought it was important to give cards without first speaking with players, seems to be proven a bad idea by this game. The mere fact that there are more yellow and red cards in this World Cup than any previously is reason enough. But in the round of 16, where you win and go to the quarterfinals or lose and go home, the referee is vital to maintaining an orderly game. Is it physical? Of course, and that was to be expected. But the difference between a physical game and 16 yellow cards and 4 reds is massive. FIFA needs to really work hard on fixing their referees before the critical quarterfinals and further games begin.

There was one great thing that I noticed though. After being ejected with red cards, a Netherlands and Portugal player, who both play on Barcelona, were shown sitting in the stands next to each other discussing something. One would presume it was the referee. It was a difficult game for both teams. One of the worst outcomes is that 2 players are out and 8 have a yellow going into the next round. This will not bode well. It means that the next match will start with a disadvantage, a large one. Referees are not supposed to affect games or the outcomes, but obviously this is not the case here. I feel bad for the Portugal fans. It’s hard to imagine them moving on.

Another thought is that France, a team I have no particular love for moved on today. I really don’t think they should have. The 2nd goal, which came in the 83rd minute was from a cheap call. There was no reason for the yellow, there was no foul. Yes the french player did what every player does, he took a dive. But if the referee or the assistants were watching they would have noticed that. Without that yellow, and the kick that followed there is no second goal. There is also no 3rd goal and Spain would have fought to go to overtime. I think the overall outcome winds up entirely different. Of course I’m not a fan of France so take that as you will.

And if I see another Tony Sinclair, ‘Ready to Tanqueray’ television commercial I’m going to puke. I think the guy is an idiot. Not the Black African American actor but the character he portrays. It’s nice that he is supposed to evoke an image of intellectuality and sophistication, but I feel like he is snobbish, snooty, gauche, a drunk and offensive. You would think that a man as rich as he portends wouldn’t waste such large amounts of money on a fetish for ice cubes. Maybe its just me but I don’t like any of his commercials.

This is what I think, what do you think?

Daymon Wayans nervous and Harry Potter dying

Bad news out there for the Harry Potter fans. I know my sister will hate hearing this, but 2 characters are going to die in the final book. Now this will spark a lot of debate I am sure. Like many others I am a fan of the movies, I think Hagrid is a great character. But I have not read the books as of yet. According to one of my sisters I’m missing quite a bit. Given that, I have followed the movies and I will say that it is a very enjoyable series - which tends to be quite rare. If I had to guess I’d say that Harry and Valdermot are the 2 that will die. But Harry’s archnemisis may not qualify as a main character (though he will get killed) so my other thought is the main Slitherin character. The boy who fights with Harry all the time, is a snob and who’s father is an underling of Valdermot. I would even guess that he will die trying to save Harry. [Yes I have forgotten completely what his name is] I don’t know any more, and perhaps less, than most but there is my guess in black and white.

Lastly, its nice to hear that even entertainers get nervous meeting other entertainers. I’m speaking about the talented Mr. Damon Wayans on his hosting of the BET Awards. While Mr. Wayans is no slouch (I really liked his role in The Last Boy Scout and his work on My Wife and Kids), and hardly unfamiliar with being around successful entertainers (he is part of the Wayans family after all and he helped find/create Mr. Jim Carrey and Mr. Jaime Foxx) it’s refreshing to hear he too is like a fan when faced meeting the likes of Mr. Michael Jordan and Prince. I rarely envy the opportunities others have, and few entertainers leave me speachless in meeting them (I have met several over the years), but I do know that there are a few that I too would stutter upon meeting.

One thing that I find interesting and hopeful is the small comment on some of the Wayan’s getting together to create a movie studio. I for one look forward to that. Not because I want more films like the upcoming Little Man or the now somewhat over done Scary Movie franchise, but because it would be the first Black African American-owned movie studio. Or at least the first I have ever heard of. And if it were to happen, located near Oakland I can only hope that there would be an influx of Black African Amemerican, Hispanic and other minority figures involved in the behind the scenes activities, as well as in front of the camera. It’s about time that non-whites got a chance to work behind and in front of the camera, in significant positions. For those that are unaware, the percentage of non-whites working behind the camera is estimated at 5% or less. I would dare say that Mr. Spike Lee and Mr. John Singleton, et al., are not the exceptions but the rule. Given an opportunity to showcase more individuals I can be proven right or wrong, and I would love the chance for either as it means more are there working. We will see what happens, and I hope it does happen.

This is what I think, what do you think?

'Brilliant!" Guiness, and sad losses

There have been a few things of note in recent days. I apologize that I have fallen behind, but work and the World Cup have kept me quite busy. Also keep and eye out for a few more changes to the inscribed tshirts and other custom goods.

There were 2 deaths that occurred recently. Mr. Aaron Spelling was the noted creator of 90210, Charlie’s Angels, Love Boat, 7th Heaven and many others. They may not have been the greatest shows ever, but they kept us, the masses entertained. And Mr. Spelling was a good dad, in that he created a career for his daughter Tori. I won’t say that Tori Spelling is completely without talent, but I think many would agree she is perhaps as talented as she is good looking. Just my opinion on that. With the loss of Mr. Spelling I feel bad that millions will lose the chance to numb their minds on the weekly weakly scripted programs. That is not a reflection on the man, he did his job well. And I feel that without him, far more reality programs will fill the airwaves and I’d rather have all of the above rather than that.

The other loss came from the lead guitarist of Kool & the Gang. Mr. Claydes Chales Smith was responsible for hits like Jungle Boogie, Joanna and Celebration (the 80's were fun weren’t they). Many of these songs, and others bring me a lot of great memories and as part of the cause of these songs I’m sorry to hear of his death. For those too young to have lived when these songs first came out, I suggest listening to them. Unlike many songs of today, theses were pleasant and happy songs that just celebrated life. There is a lot to be said for music of that nature. And a sadness when those responsible for such music pass on.

I see that recently Guiness beer won an award for their commercial showing people enjoying the beer and then traveling back in time. It sounds quite interesting, though I have never seen the ad. I have seen and love the ‘Brilliant’ commercials though. You have probably seen them with 2 Monty Python-esque men, one of which is an ‘inventor’ of dubious nature with his colleague being a sort of yes man with Pinky-ish qualities. [Pinky and the Brain was a cartoon that was hilarious. And if you haven’t seen Monty Python there is no way I can explain the fantasic segue skits that were done with stop motion. Rent a video of their shows and you’ll probably become a fan of british humor or at least this program.] It’s a shame that America loves pilsner beers, which aren’t bad, to almost the exclusion of any other type as I do enjoy a good stout or ale and it is hard to find them. And some of the commercials that abound for the other styles of beer are never seen here. [While not a beer commercial the french award winning commercial for, I think it was, Perrie water was too funny. I’m sure fanatical religious conservatives and other similar prudes would have hated it, so that tells you how good it was for everyone else.] At any rate, several friends and I now use the ‘Brilliant!’ comment to express things. I can see this being the next ‘Wassup!’ catchphrase. Don’t be surprised if you start hearing it a lot. And keep an eye out for the television commercials, they are worth it.

Reflecting on USA vs. Ghana

So I feel that its time to speak about Team USA. After the splendid and intense match against Italy, I like many felt the US had a chance to make it to the second round. The Italy match was a great performance and showed the potential of the team, referee interference not withstanding. There was a fire there and it showed on the field.

So what happened against Ghana? Where was that same intensity and desire to win? Again there was a lackluster speed to the team. Again Eddie Johnson was not started, Reyna was ineffective (while he was on the field), Beasley was mostly out of the match. McBride seemed dimmed. Many of these things are the fault of the coach, Bruce Arena. Mr. Arena made the choices of who started and how long they played. He chose the pre-game tactics. And after the unfortunate goal just before the half, it was the mission of Mr. Arena to whip the team up and get them back into the game. 2 - 1 with a half to play is not the end of the match. There was much left to do, and could have been done. Changes could have been set, but were not.

This is not a reflection on soccer in the USA. It’s hardly what we are capable of. And I think, with a new coach a lot of things may improve. Hopefully the same will be done by FIFA. In the Angola game, the 43rd minute, the goalkeeper was hit but there was no red card. In the 36th minute a yellow was given to Iran. Looking at these penalties and comparing them to the controversial calls that went against the USA, the 2 red cards and the penalty kick, one has to wonder. The comparisons do not hold up. Of course there were several games where cards were or were not given and referees missed crucial plays, or disrupted match play. There is no consistency other than the fact that more cards have been given than any other World Cup to my knowledge. That disrupts and affects games. Referees aren’t there to influence a match, just manage it. FIFA needs to work on there situation.

I was not pleased. What more can be said.

Spain, Brazil and Argentina look on fire. Germany and England look solid. Ghana is a wild card. The continuing games should be quite interesting.

Red cards, shades of color onscreens, and inscribed original products

Yes I am still upset about the red card given to the American soccer player in the Italy v. USA match. FIFA may stand by the referee, as they must during a match or have all calls questioned, but there is no question that other games have had similar fouls without such harsh and instantaneous responses. For those following the World Cup matches, today there was a foul by Iran vs. Angola in the 36th minute that was worse than Mr. Pope’s and it resulted in a yellow card. Or the foul in the 43rd minute by Angola against the Iranian goalkeeper, again no red card. Or the first yellow card, at the 23rd minute in the Ukraine vs. Saudi Arabia match. All these fouls were equal or lesser than the USA fouls, yet there were no red cards nor immediate ejections of the players. So if anyone doubts that there is a reason to be upset, explain that to me first.

In other thoughts, I do realize that there is a world outside the World Cup, I recently came to wonder something I hadn’t though of before. Or at least it wasn’t something that was apparent in my mind consciously. The Rock, Mr. Dwayne Johnson, is a Black African American. At least to my knowledge he is, but I don’t know much about him or wrestling. He is of mixed race as I recall. I say this because Disney is now reworking an entire movie around him.

Disney is renown in the industry as being similar to Scrooge. To put it in other terms they are cheap where ever possible, or so my information has made me aware. To delay or re-work a script due to an actor, of any stature, is rare. So in hearing that they are in such a situation on Daddy’s Girl was a surprise to me. But then I started to think.

I find it interesting that the hype and attention provided to light-skinned, mixed race Black African American actors is disproportionate to their darker-skinned peers. Ability and paychecks aside this feels inconsistent. Mr. Denzel Washington is not given the same homage in the press media as The Rock. Mr. Samuel Jackson is not regarded the same, in my opinion by the media, as Mr. Vin Diesel, who did his best to obfuscate his heritage for as long as possible. Why is that?

I am not saying that any of these actors are bad, actually I enjoy each of them in the genres and movies I have seen them in. I think each is quite capable and enjoyable. But there is a difference in the way the media, and it seems the movie studios, portray them. There seems to be a more subtle push for the darker Black African American actors in a leading movie role than those of lighter skin. Even Mr. Terrence Howard is treated differently.

And this difference is apparent mostly in movies where a Black African American actor is the lead or a support. Or if the role is more of a violent, stereotypical nature than one that is atypical. Mr. Terrence Howard as an example was lauded for his work in Hustler and Flow (a pimp with a dream in essence) but received far less attention for his work in The Best Man, which I thought was a standout performance. Another example would be Mr. Denzel Washington in Training Day as opposed to several other films, especially his role of Mr. Malcolm X in the movie of the same name. If he deserved an Oscar for Training Day, Mr. Washington deserved 2 for Malcolm X.

So why is there a seeming discrepancy? Or am I just missing something? Am I being hypersensitive or am I on to something? Do you objectively see what I see?

Lastly, if you have not noticed, there are several changes to the catalogue of products I provide. I will be adding designs based on my original concepts, as modified by several artists, over the next month or 2. I’m always open to new interpretations and designs that augment my work. I will be giving credit and recognition to those artists who’s designs appear. I hope to expand the line, and provide real world models (real Black African American, Hispanic, White, Asian and other minority people) with my goods soon. Don’t be surprised if you see me, Michael Vass, in one or 2 model shots as well. Please take a look at the items and provide support. Buy something if you like it or let me know where I can make improvements.

USA vs, Italy - we were robbed by the referee

Ok, there is just one thing to ask. What the hell was the referee thinking. I cannot think of a worse officiated game than the Italy - USA game. The USA was dominant, and played like they should. I love the game. They attacked and controlled the ball. Italy was not prepared or capable to deal with what we brought to the field.

I still think that Eddie Johnson should have been placed in the starting line up. And Beasley was not the substitution I would have made in the second half. Given this the team played with a fire and determination to win. This is what the American team is all about. This is where we get some respect in the world (in regard to this game). And to be able to hold the Italian futbol team from scoring a goal while being a man down for an entire half is just amazing.

But the referee was insane. There is no question that the first red card to the Italian player was justified. That was uncalled for, the elbow to the face. I’m glad McBride was unhurt, relatively. But the subsequent red cards were useless. Even the Itallian commentator realized that the ejections were wrong. Pope just made a late check, worth maybe a yellow card but hardly an ejection. It was no worse than anything in normal play in any other game. It had no comparison to the elbow red card. The other red card against the U.S. team was equally undeserved.

Every fan and person who watched the game recognized the situation for what it was. The referee biased the game and prevented the U.S. team from winning. There is no one who can question that with the way we played, given the 2 players stayed on the field, we would have won. The game was unbalanced, and not by play on the pitch. FIFA needs to remove this referee and this time make sure he never works another game.

He had been removed before for undisclosed reasons. So why was he brought back? Or allowed to be in this match? What ever the reason, the decision was wrong. It cost us a win and a 3 point position. The one man advantage was a position that the U.S. soccer team deserved to finish the game with. As you can tell I am very upset by this. There was no fairness, even hand balls by Italy were unseen. And while I realize there was a rule for why the goal in the second half was disallowed, it just added to my anger at the officials.

Given all this, the U.S. can hold their heads high. They redeemed themselves. They played an astounding round. There was virtually nothing more that could have been done to help the round. Except perhaps to bring in Eddie Johnson as a substitute in the second half around the 75th minute. Bruce Arena did a great job in surprising everyone with the roster. I only hope the game against Ghana will be as good and as well planned.

Speaking of Ghana, wow. They played an excellent match. 2 well played goals and strong defense. The only team from Africa to win so far and they deserved the win. The 20,000 dollars promised by their government for each win is the least they should have. The pride they now have will definitely inspire future World Cups. Though I wish it was the Ivory Coast, as they had the best reason to win. Yet there have been several great games in this Cup so far. Brazil and Ronaldhino look fantastic. Argentina is strong. Ecuador is a definite surprise. The second round will really be something to see.

This is what I think, what do you think.

Michael Jordan and Robert Johnson

Here is something for the naysayers. For all the complaints about Mr. Robert Johnson, and his decision to sell BET, there is now a bit of positive reinforcement. I’ve mentioned before that rather than complaining about what he did others in the Black community should follow his lead and create enterprises they believe in and think are worthwhile. I also mentioned that the black community should support Mr. Johnson, directly or indirectly. It seems that one individual either heard my thoughts, or came to the same conclusion.

Mr. Michael Jordan has become a major investor in RLJ Companies, the new industry of Mr. Johnson. Via this Mr. Michael Jordan is now part owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. I’m not a fan of basketball but as far as I am aware RLJ Companies and thus Mr. Jordan are the only Black Owned company, and individual, to own a NBA basketball team. Mr. Jordan is no fool, and smart enough to earn roughly 37 million dollars a year though he retired some time ago. His investment would indicate to me that he believes that this is a profitable venture. Beyond that he has supported the efforts of a black-owned business directly.

How many others out there can say the same? And what will the black community in general do? Will you support black business, and a sport that is directly targeted to Black African Americans in a manner that no other sport ever has been except possibly boxing, and watch the Bobcats? Will you choose to look the other way because you are upset about Mr. Robert Johnson’s move up in business? I tend to think that Mr. Jordan is a far better businessman than I and I would rather support him than detract. But perhaps others feel differently.

Well this is one way to look at it. I’m sure there are others.

Cats and Comic Books - the amazing Peter Parker

Ok, we have gone too far now. I mean I thought all the reality shows (Big Brother, Survivor, The Real World, etc.) were just the bottom barrel of public (and cable) television. If there is a complete lack of vision and creativity in this nation, reality shows are the ultimate expression of that. But as bad as it its with reality shows giving us the thrilling adventures of cooks, models and the like there is now a new breathtaking program coming to kill the last few numb brain cells some in America have. Are you ready for this? It’s a show watching 10 cats in a window in New York City. I am not kidding. I won’t even bother to say more as I am killing brain cells just discussing this. And if you are looking forward to this, get an appointment with a psychiatrist because in my opinion you have no life and it’s a problem.

As more and more movies emulate and bring to life decades long, and old, storylines from various comic books I am reminded of something. Mr. David Carradine made a statement in Kill Bill vol. 2 that went along these lines, ‘Superman is the only hero that is always Superman. His alter ego, his disguise is Clark Kent. And that is interesting because what is his choice to blend in with humanity? A coward, a weakling. Someone who is so meek and spineless as to be almost invisible. That is his alien take on our human condition.’ I may not remember the entire quote exactly, but the essence is there. Think of that the next time you watch the ultimate boy scout (while meant as a negative because of the extreme of what Superman represents I do not mean to offend Boy Scouts in general) as he is out there defending truth, justice and the American way. I never like him, and what he stood up for was never what I lived. And if you disagree, where are the Black African American, Hispanic, and other minority characters in the comic books. How many decades does his series go thru before they even show up in the background? And there weren’t even bad guys (other than Asian) for a few decades if I recall correctly.

Of course I have a problem with Marvel Comics right now. Who gave the ok to have Spiderman to reveal his identity to the world? That is insane. Not that Peter Parker ever had an easy life, but every villain and crackpot he has ever faced will be after him. And I understand the corollary being made to the Patriot Act and other issues in the world and America today. But I can’t see a character that is closer to reality, representing the inner strength and struggles we all have, giving up on a massive part of who he is. But I will get into the political ramifications on my http://vasandtheworld.blogspot.com site. On a pure entertainment view I don’t like it.

Yes I’m a comic book geek, or at least I was throughout my teens up til my mid-20's. And for those that don’t know Sin City is hardly the only great graphic novel. Read the Watchmen if you want an intelligent and politically minded comic. And there are dozens of other titles out there of similar quality, especially if you look back a few years. Some comic books stopped being just for little kids a long time ago.

USA vs. Czech Rep. - What happened there?

What was that? Team USA was anemic. They looked completely at half pace. There was no cohesive attack plan, and no energy. Eddie Johnson was the best thing about the whole team. 3 shots on goal that actually looked like they could get to the back of the net. We need to show a better game. The feeble offense we showed will not work against Italy. Beasly needs to be taken out. And what is going on in the backfield? Keller did as well as can be expected since he was taking about 12 shots on goal per half. But defense means you stop them from making so many attacks on the goalkeeper. How about we actually go after the ball instead of just standing there watching the ball.

Games like this are why we are not respected in the World Cup. And will the announcers stop mentioning the FIFA rankings. Everyone knows they are completely meaningless. And the performance of these ‘world class’ entertainers is abysmal. I didn’t expect a win, few honestly did. I did expect a score, or at the very least an attempt at showing competition. We need to seriously win a game and get a draw. We need goals. In all honesty we are not the best in the world, in the only sport that is a world event, but we are far better than this showing. Our players have played in European leagues and in the U.S. and have been in the World Cup before. It’s time to step up and earn some respect. Landon and Arena need to whip the team, create a strategy and inject some energy.

I wish that all this coverage being spent on the U.S. match was equalled a bit by coverage of other games. ABC and ESPN seem to be in a massive rush (except for today), on any other game, to get to an NBA commercial or Golf or anything but Cup coverage. It feels like they just pop in with enough time to say when the next U.S. match will be and how good we are, and then instantly to the match at hand, then immediately afterwards another word about the U.S. and off to anything else. Give the American sports fans a chance to get into this sport. Put some effort into the coverage and providing some intelligent knowledge of this well documented and historied game, people will get into it. They do across the world. They stop wars and presidential elections and if more saw the game I think they’d understand why. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t talk about our home team, or that they shouldn’t be our emphasis. But give soccer a chance to gain fans, which will then give it support and better players in the future. With that you can get a team that will seriously compete and win. And America loves to win. And I would really enjoy seeing a match were America has an honest chance to win a Cup.

The World Series is really the American series. The Stanley Cup is Canadian, the Super Bowl is super even though it’s just American. The Olympics are nice, but this is the sport that is a world sport, that kids in the poorest and richest nations all understand. America can stand out, given time, but we can’t buy our players (like in other sports) we need to build them. If that isn’t national pride I don’t know what is. This is world entertainment and we deserve to be on that stage. Let’s support our team and its future and join the rest of the world in this game.

Billy Preston, grand theft auto, Jerry Lewis

Let me take a break from the World Cup action to mention a few things. First there was the passing of music great Mr. Billy Preston. He had quite a career, and made contributions to several generations of musicians and fans. It can be argued that without him several songs by the Beatles may never have been made, and his importance to them can be seen in the fact he performed with them in their last live performance. Not only that, but Mr. George Harrison, Mr. Ringo Starr and Mr. John Lennon each made records with Mr. Preston. Bit this influence was not limited to working with just this Rock and Roll band. Performances and recordings were made with the Rolling Stones, Sly and the family Stone, Ms. Aretha Franklin, Mr. Bob Dylan, Ms. Mahalia Jackson, Little Richard and Mr. Ray Charles. If that isn’t a massively impressive resume the fact that he also released solo projects, like Nothing from Nothing and others, add up to a career that is matched by few entertainers in one genre let alone so many. Entertainers of this caliber are always missed, even moreso when they pass so young.

Also recently a settlement has finally taken place in the “Hot Coffee” case against Take-Two Interactive software and Rockstar Games. I’m sure many out there are familiar with the famous and in some respects infamous games of this company. The Grand Theft Auto series of games. Now I’ve mentioned before how I despise these games. And the pathetic efforts of Democrats (in particular Sen. Hilary Clinton) to cash in on the sort of hidden modification to the most recent version of the game. The settlement was a minor fine, and doesn’t compare to either the 24 million in refunds or the roughly 75 million in sales this version has generated in just one month net. I for one am upset, not because of the virtual sex-like motions made by a couple of clothed pixel characters, but that still no one makes any fuss about the depiction of the characters and the message the game exports to children and gamers around the world. I have yet to hear N.O.W. or other women’s groups that want to rant about an anchorwoman who believes raising her family is more important than her career, say even one thing about the depiction of women in this game. Why can’t the NAACP say they think that Black African Americans can be shown as better than just gang bangers, felons, addicts and criminals. I realize that video game characters are often violent; but it would be nice to see more than a mere gesture of characters that were the protagonist and were Black African American or Hispanic. Like many other gamers, of various ages, seeing characters like myself would be nice and far more compelling if they weren’t the obvious villain or reinforced stereotype.

On a lighter note, Mr. Jerry Lewis just received his 3rd roast from the Friar’s Club. The reason is his appointment to the position of abbot of the club. I’ve seem tapes of previous roasts and have heard about what can happen at those roasts only members are allowed to. I can only guess what may have happened at a roast where Ice-T, members of the Sopranos cast and the Godfather movies were all attending. It may not be the French Legion of Honor but I have to think it’s a pretty good honor for a comedian who helped shape not only comedy but also how television and movies are made. Congratulations Mr. Lewis.

Lastly, I must mention that I really thought the American announcers spoke in poor taste during part of the Iran - Mexico game Sunday. There was no call to discuss Iran’s political actions during the game. That is the wrong forum. Discussing politics of a country we do not like in this venue would be like Mr. Yao Ming discussing how horrendous it was to use 2 nuclear bombs on the Japanese after winning the NBA finals. Or for Mr. Danys Baez Gonzalez to comment on how we are currently waging a war against an ideal, and in a country due to fabrications, while we have millions dying of poverty and drug addiction during the World Series. It’s not that I don’t find those sports events important, or that I question our troops. My comments on http://vasandtheworld.blogspot.com speak for themselves. The point is any kind of comment like that would create a wave of complaints. What the announcers did is no less insulting than what kayne west did during the Katrina Relief effort. It was just massively inappropriate.

Both my countries won the opening World Cup matches

Well it was quite the day. Germany and Ecuador won today in their respective World Cup matches, just as I was hoping. I will say that while Germany had problems in their backfield they played well. Costa Rica on the other hand did not deserve the 2 goals they had. Both times they were offsides. I don’t know how blind the referee was but how he missed both offsides was ridiculous. Suffice to say it annoyed the crap out of me.

It was a good game though as I mentioned. 4 goals for Germany and solid offense. If they don’t get some work on the backfield they will have some trouble down the line. Especially with Ecuador. The way Ecuador was playing they definitely look like a team going to the second round at least. Poland just never got a chance to take the momentum away. Solid defense and a bit of help from the goal posts 2x didn’t hurt either.

If this is the pace and style of the games to come this will be an exciting World Cup. The big thing I noticed, as I watched the games in a bar where no one had any clue of the games or their importance, was that the announcers for the Germany game on ESPN2 sucked. They were Americans and they droned on so much I almost wanted to turn the sound back off. I had it off for the first 20 minutes, thru all the goals, and it was only slightly less interesting than listening to the announcers. They were so bad as to be talking about the currency of Costa Rica (U.S. dollars) and the fact they are one of a few countries without a standing army. Like anyone watching the game cares. And I can imagine the lack of excitement on the goals. If you ever listen to a game on Univision, now there is announcers. They can scream Goal longer than the replay of the actual goal. I love that.

At least ESPN2 was smart enough to have other announcers for the additional game. In the Ecuador vs. Poland game there was an Irish and English announcer. They some life in there voices, and the commentary on the game was relevant. They seemed happy and into the game. Even when they plugged the England vs Paraguay game it was fun and light hearted. I can see that being part of the reason most Americans can’t appreciate the game. That and the lack of big scores, no timeouts or stop of action and the need to pay attention to the entire game. A shame but most Americans can’t wait for things to happen.

The best part was that I scared the crap out of a book club during the Germany game. Mr. Klose played a great game as did Mr. Lehman. In the second match the entire bar went quiet as I cheered the second goal by Ecuador. They though I was crazy. And I felt they were missing out. Suffice to say Binghamton is probably not the best place to watch the games. Or I need to find a better place. Let me know if there are any options out there.

George Clooney pledges donation for African Debt Relief

In the past I have spoken about entertainers and celebrities donations to various causes. There are those that do the now seemingly obligatory benefit concert, which many take a fee or percentage to appear at, or televised program. That is not to say that Live Aid or other such programs and events are bad. To the contrary, I think it’s a great thing when people give some of their time, energy and money to a cause they believe in. The key is that they believe in it. If an entertainer believes in what they are doing, I do not think they need to be paid to appear or to perform. It’s not like a benefit concert for what they believe in will remove their ability to live their lifestyles. Or impede their income stream.

Now I mention the above because of something I noticed. Mr. George Clooney is not a stranger for speaking up on subjects and causes he believes in. Where it is a statement in the form of his exceptionally well done Good Night and Good Luck or his statements to being attention to Darfur and Africa. And to my knowledge Mr. Clooney has never been brusque or rude in his manner of making his statements. But I must take a moment to commend his most recent action. It involves his attempt at opening a resort/casino complex in Las Vegas.

It seems the plan was to create a primarily residential complex, that would also contain a small casino and hotel, that was based on an old style of Vegas. At 25-acres it was no small venture, and he was not involved alone as the cost of the land to be developed was $90 million. Of course like building almost anything anywhere in the country, costs escalated and the need for a larger casino caused Mr. Clooney and his partners to change their minds. They instead sold the property to other developers for $202 million. A tidy profit indeed. But here is the point.

Mr. George Clooney has stated that he will be providing his portion of the profits to the African Debt Relief Project. Now that sounds impressive to me. I realize that not all of the $112 million is his. Mr. Clooney may only be a small portion of the funds involved. Yet the fact that he is willing to put those proceeds directly to the organization is impressive.

And the attention that this generosity will provide for the organization is enormous. These are the kind of donations I would expect a celebrity or entertainer to do. Lending money and their name to an organization they believe in to help that organization and bring attention to the cause it represents. Hopefully others will follow his lead and give of themselves honestly, without remuneration. That impresses me and makes me want to know more about their cause. Otherwise I feel entertainers are just on one big television commercial, telling me what they got paid to say to sell a product.

Mrs. Elizabeth Vargas, formerly of World News Tonight

But for those less interested in sports, there is something in television that was of interest. It seems that Mrs. Elizabeth Vargas has stepped down from her position as anchor of World News Tonight. Now I’m no fan of network television, not in some time, but reach the anchor chair for a prestigious show like this is no small feat for anyone. Feminists were happy about her promotion. Now there are various women and organizations that are ‘pissing in her cornflakes’ because she has decided to step down to raise a child. Are they ok?

After hearing years of complaints that women can’t get to the top in various fields, and here is another woman who does make it to the top. And she has one child already. A working mom, and she has done extremely well for herself. She lets the world know that she has become pregnant again, a major decision to share such news. And then she decides that in the best interest of her family she will give up her job for her family, for a time. Now what is wrong with that?

Organizations are upset because they say she was forced out of her position. If so why didn’t she say so? With some news anchors having influence similar to some high profile entertainers it is easy for them to place pressure on the networks simply by hinting at displeasure, let alone discrimination. Others seem upset that she has place her family before her career. That since she has had a career while raising one child she should do so with the next. Who is being racist and discriminatory.

I mean I think its wrong That these groups would besiege this woman because she has made a decision that millions of mothers make everyday. I mean shouldn’t they be happy that she has done well enough that she can choose to not work and raise her family? Isn’t that a major success? My mother worked and raised 4 kids by herself, and she had no choice. I’m sure if she could have she would have liked to take off time, with the knowledge she had a job waiting for her afterwards (Mrs. Vargas will co-host 20/20 upon her return - hardly a dead end position). Isn’t it important to remember that even though a woman may have to deal with a lot to reach the top levels of success, she is still a woman and that motherhood is no less a responsibility. Matter of fact I think its more important. Unless these groups want us to believe that the human race propagates spontaneously.

I have nothing against successful women. I think anyone should be able to reach the top of their careers, if they have the ability. I also think that everyone should know when they have reached a point where career is not as important as life goals. Career is not a life goal. Career pays the bills, provides income, and allows for growth of the spirit. Career can be an asset to pride, and a defining character point. But it is not the reason of life itself. Some people and organizations forget that. A career is a means to a larger end, not the means and end itself. One of the best examples I can give about that thought is Mr. Dave Chappelle.

So if Mrs. Vargas, or any other woman decides that her family is more important than her career, I applaud her. I wish my mother had had that choice.

World Cup is about to begin - Go Germany!

For those who are not familiar, or never read my post GOOOOAAALLLL!!!!!, the tournement is about to begin. Yes, the World Cup starts on June 9, 2006! I am very excited, because I expect Germany to win. Brazil winning could be fun too. I hope to watch every game that is available in the U.S.

For those who are unfamiliar, the World Cup is held only once every 4 years. The top football (known as soccer in the United States) teams of the world come together and play for one month. The best in the world hold the title til the next games. The games are played in various stadiums in one nation, this year is Germany’s turn. Now I have mentioned that this is a big deal. Let me elaborate. It is estimated that the final match will have over 1 billion veiwers on television worldwide. 3 billion will be at the combined games. 30,000,000,000 worldwide will watch the various matches in total. Now those are numbers. Baseball, the NBA, and Football combined don’t hit these numbers.

But that isn’t the impact that football (soccer) has. Due to the fact that the Ivory Coast [it’s a nation in Africa] has, for the first time, a team going to play in the Cup the warring factions have called a truce. The government and those same groups have sat down and started talks. In effect, due to being able to compete in this competition, peace has been given a chance where no other force or action has had any effect. A nation has united because of this one act. Tell me that doesn’t make you the least bit interested in what may happen. I know I am.

What can Black Entertainment USA be?

Well things are a bit slow so let me ask this, what do you want to see here on www.blackentertainmentblog.com? I’m working on new tshirt designs, some poetry and additional audio files. I plan on a few changes to the background image and maybe a photo page. I have seen that those that have taken the poll find some of my commentary less than appealing, though most enjoy it. I’m glad about that, as I will not change my style of writing, nor my opinions. I don’t expect everyone to love what I have to say, and I am always happy for any comment, dissenting or not.

But speak up folks. Tell me what kind of t-shirts you might like to see. Are there any specific poems you’d like to hear audio of? Is there anything I’m forgetting to added to the site that will make you experience more complete and satisfying? Yes, I’d love for more of my goods to be bought, everything has a cost of course. But what else is there that I can do, to bring you back more and to introduce what I have to say to more people? Let me know.

In other thoughts, I am shocked. It’s not that the rap group Youngbloodz members and entourage were arrested, for drugs and weapons charges (what else would you expect?). No its that more of these entertainers are not stopped and arrested more often. How many of these want-to-be-criminals, and actual criminals, would be locked up if given a legal and fair cause to check there tour buses. I don’t doubt that many a rock group would also be behind bars as well for the same or similar reasons. And they deserve to go to jail as well. I have no respect for those that promote, even implicitly, drug use to minors.

But in happier news in the rap hip-hop world, LL Cool J will receive the Golden Note award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. I’m really happy that LL Cool J is getting recognition as he has really done well. Since 1985, he has consistently released albums that have sold well (with out the need to pander to the ‘gansta’ trend). That alone stands out in a genre that has few long term successes. Add to this the fact that he has had a solid television career, and moved up in the ranks to perform in various movies. And I mean movies with substance and quality, and budgets above the low cost, high profit extended music videos that are the new blaxploitation films of today. I’ve said more about LL Cool J in a previous post from early this year, and you can see what I thought there.

More later today.
