300 Spartans at Thermoplye - 10.07.2006.1

Have you noticed the movie trailers for the film 300. It catches the attention and is a very stylized trailer, which I expect the film to be as well. From these early clips I’m guessing that the battle scenes will be decent to good. The rest of the film I’m not so sure. Some may be thinking this is another comic book that has been converted to a movie. In part you would be correct.

While Mr. Frank Miller did create a graphic novel that was titled 300 in the 1990’s, the movie is not quite a translation from the book. To be more accurate it is a ‘revision’ of the original film called The 300 Spartans. That was a great film. Made in 1962, it tells the story of the Battle of Thermoplye. That was a classic battle and many strategists have studied it.

The battle was probably one of the best ever fought. It was the meeting of 300 Spartans, considered the greatest warriors in the world, and 250,000 Persians. Yes the numbers are accurate, the Persian army had that many men. Of course everyone expected them to be wiped out in a blink of the eye. To the massive surprise of the Persians the Spartans kept them at bay for 3 days and rallied all of Greece to defeat them. The fact is the Persians were defeated in fact by the 300 at Thermoplye. Their sprits were completely broken.

Mr. Miller saw that movie, as I have [in fact I own a copy], and it inspired him to make the graphic novel. I can only hope that this new film will do justice to the original. It may have been black & white, with few good effects but it carried the emotion one would have expected for those men. If this film is done with the same eye to detail as was Mr. Miller’s Sin City then it should be a wonderful film.

This is what I think, what do you think?
