Reader comment: Christy in Utah

I had to stop and catch my breath after reading the comment made by Christy about my post The most dangerous people in America - 11.4.2007.1 (and part 2 - 4.9.2008.1). By this point I would have thought that I was used to these kinds of comments, but sometimes I’m still taken for a loss.

The full comment can be seen at Black & White Blog, where I an a co-author. I am reproducing it here verbatim.

Christy

Perhaps Mike the reason why you always hear of black youth being killed by the police is because they are the violent ones. I live in Utah, which is predominatly white. They dont go around and shoot at eachother, or attack eachother. Yes, they act like boys and yell and tease people. That is hardly killing people or carrying guns.

I think you are in a bit of denial there Mike. Use the recent floods as an example. People are pulling together and working their own way out. They help thier neighbors and help themselves.\\

Then look at New Orleans, when there was flooding they all fell apart, started to rape eachother and shoot eachother. They were shooting at the helicopters trying to help them for hell sake.

It is the mentality that is the problem here. Whites for the most part have the opinion that we need to take care of ourselves and take responsiblity. Blacks, however are of the opinion that they are somehow owed something, and cant pull thier heads out of thier butts long enough to figure out how to take care of themselves.

That is what makes blacks more dangerous then whites. Their inablity to take any kind of responsiblity.

The amount of ignorance being spewed in these few words is enormous. I can say that the friends I have in Salt Lake City, and my experiences in Utah have never reflected the thoughts of Christy. But it reminds me that when any group of people in America is isolated from everyone else ignorance and blatant stupidity is rampant – like Eugene Oregon.

First of all Christy, you ignored all the facts I provided in the post and follow-up comments. Either that is because you chose to ignore factual data provided by the Government, or you could not allow yourself to understand the data’s meaning as it would invalidate your views.

And what views they are. Talk about simplistic racist denial. I am aware that New Orleans had issues after Hurricane Katrina. That is after the flood was over and the streets continued to hold bodies of the dead, and the Government failed to provide the populace with enough food and shelter. I am also aware that the issues that were occurring after the flood were not restricted to a single race, though the major news media had a great time inferring that it was a Black issue only. Had you looked for the full news stories, and not relied on the 15 second news video clips, you would have easily seen that Christy.

And don’t forget the fact that often the media, during the New Orleans floods, showed pictures of Whites and Blacks in the flood waters. The difference was only that when Blacks were shown they were referred to as looters, and Whites were said to be foraging for survival. The bias was blatant if you could look with clear eyes and an open mind.

Still I am unaware of helicopters coming to aid civilians that were being shot at. I’d love to see a link to that news report, provide it if it exists as I never found such a story in all my coverage or following of the story.

Christy, you are as ignorant of history as you are of using a spell check program. You state that Whites take responsibility and care of themselves. Let’s walk through a bit of history. Modern math, which enables Mankind to walk on the moon and have the internet, is all based on the number 0, created and used by the Middle East and Africa. The cradle of civilization, the beginnings of trade, and formal written language, all created in Africa.

Let’s move forward in time. The major wars of the Ancients were virtually all started by White countries needing to dominate the rest of the world. Roman, Greeks, Huns, Prussians, Saxons, ect. It’s a huge list. And how civilized were these hordes? They proliferated the single greatest plague known to humanity, the Bubonic Plague. Who found the cure for the Plague, the Moors – who were African.

The mentality that has created some of the worst conditions and history in Mankind can be summed up as such – European Whites believe themselves to be elite and superior, thus they fought near continuous wars across every part of the world they found. In each part of the world they brought disease, and with their barbarism forced their system of life onto every other culture they encountered. They stole nearly ever advance they could understand and militarized it. The effects are still reverberating across the world.

That is history.

In more modern times we have seen a slow progression towards understanding other cultures. America lags many nations in this effort. Our separation form the rest of the world has allowed us to be isolated and retard our interactions with other cultures. Thus we have never fully unified as a nation of multiple cultures.

Where, Christy, is the responsibility of Whites for the enslavement of Africans? The Government has never offered an apology – and the mere mention of such an act enrages millions. One of the greatest peacemakers ever known was Dr. Martin Luther King and it took over 20 years to provide him with a holiday, which was fought severely against by politicians in office right now like Senator McCain. It’s still a holiday that is not fully observed throughout the nation. Is that responsible?

Christy, you seem to think that the stereotypes of African Americans are true. Yet you ignore the great actions that African Americans have made throughout the existence of America. It was Blacks who learned how to provide blood transfusions that save millions of lives a year. It was Blacks that created the stoplight ensuring safe travel for tens of millions on our roads each day. The list of inventions and advancements is to long to list, and I bet you can’t name 2 of them.

And I again present you further facts.

“So we get this realization, Whites committed 4,297,146 acts of violent crime against a single person, and 759,079 acts against multiple victims that were White. Including the 40,249 multiple Black victims we get a total of 5,096,474. Thus once we move away from percentages and look at real numbers we learn that Whites are far more likely to commit a crime of violence against anyone, especially other Whites.

...

Crimes of violence 2,010,170 Under age 12 - 0.3% Ages 12-20 - 46.9% Ages 21-29 - 13.9% All over 30 - 5.7% Mixed ages - 25.9% Unknown - 7.2%

Thus 61.1% of all violent multiple crimes are committed by those at or under age 29...“

That says nothing of high school shootings – never committed by a Black or Hispanic child even in inner cities where guns and drugs are easily available – or acts of terrorism by fringe groups – like those that lead to the Oklahoma City bombings.

Christy, you don’t see the truth because you chose not to. You allow the major news media to deceive you. You cannot accept the responsibility in front of you because you are too busy heaping blame on others that aren’t exactly like you.

Christy, I accept that there are some African Americans that are not upstanding citizens of America. I accept that there are some that are not nice. Just as I accept that this is true of every race and culture. Yet I also accept that Whites in America overwhelmingly have more issues with people of color and are more violent –even against themselves – than ANY other group in America.

And the fact is that when given facts and examples of how lopsided the landscape is people like you, Christy, chose to wrap themselves in a blanket of old half-truths and misconceptions rather than deal with the situation.

I’m glad to say that most of the Whites I know are not like you Christy. They are good people that give respect to anyone that deserves it. They do not have rules or criteria for each color of person they meet. They deal with all people in the same manner, and can admit that some people are just trash – even if they are White. You are not among those people Christy.

I have lived or traveled through about 1/3 of this nation, I have lived overseas. I love this nation with every problem we have because it is the greatest in the world. But I am not in denial that through all those travels and experiences in my 40 years on this planet, there are some that dislike me just because of the color of my skin. I have had those experiences up to this year, and in reading your comment I am sure that my nephews will have them as well, sadly.

Christy, the point is not that all Whites are bad. It’s not that Whites have a history of barbarism and violence. It’s not that America seethes with an undercurrent of racism. But it is the point that reality is warped by the media in an effort to disguise the issues facing the nation, and to allow those with a mentality like yourself, a mentality that is better suited for the 9th century than the 21st, to be able to sleep at night.

I sleep well at night knowing the truth. I have no fear of people because I see and know the truth. I have friends of ever nationality and color found on the earth because I accept the truth. I have a full life and success because I do not deny the truth. Can you say the same, Christy?

You forgot to mention that Blacks weren't the first to use guns in this country, it was the Whites when they stole the land from the Native Americans. Don't forget that 98% of the Blacks were slaves and had no access to guns. Yes there were a few up risings of which they fought back and when caught were tarred and feathered hung and set on fire. What horrors one "human being" acted upon another no matter what color. Don't forget that Whites brought their young children to these "events", further indenting hate within them and for no reason at all.

Let's move it up to the 1920's when gangsters ruled with machine guns everywhere. Who then did drive-bys? In the south, Who threw bombs into Churches filled with people, mothers, fathers, grandparents and Children? I could go on and on.

I'm not saying all Whites are bad, but some are not good. Jails were not built to hold Blacks but rather Whites. Jails are filled with them too. Blacks just seemed to follow the leader.

I try hard not to hate but when people like Christy say stupid things it enrages me. It tells me racism is alive and well. Don't we all have to eat and drink in order to live? Don't we all have to sleep? Don't we all use the bathroom to relive ourselves and don't all our movements stink?

Wake up!! Smell the coffee. Life is too short and precious!!

As I had expected, Christy in Utah had a follow-up comment to what I had to say to her. The following is her reply, also found at Black and White Blog, verbatim:

July 23rd, 2008 at 12:34 am

Yes, I sure can. Go ahead and spew all you want, and have whatever opinion that you want. I will have mine, and I share that opinion with alot of others.

I am sure there are blacks that contribute to our society, and have done good things. So have white people, or have you forgotten that?

About apologizing to blacks about slavery. I will do that as soon as they apologize for enslaving the Israelites.

All the black people I have known in my life have always had a "The world owes me a living attitude".

I did not grow up sheltered, in fact I grew up in San Diego. It was about as culturally diverse as one could get. I have only been in Utah for a few years.

I come by my opinions of black people, from my own personal experience with them. I do not go by what the government or what the media says.

I have a full life, and I am very happy with it.

I find it funny that because I have the opinion I have, I must be ignorant or somehow not worthy of my opinion. Feel the way you do I could care less, I feel the way I feel and it wont change.

I am not ignorant, and I dont owe black people a dam thing. I am where I am because I have worked for it, and my husband has worked for it. We dont take from people, and we dont wait for people to help us.

I do what is right for me and my family, so yes I sleep very well at night. In fact I am about to head to bed right now, safe in the knowledge that tommorow I will still have a loving husband and great children. A life that I love living, and a life that I have earned!

Bye Bye bitter little man

My response to the second comment of Christy in Utah, also posted at B&W, is verbatim as follows:

Thank you Christy. I thank you first because I won a bet on how quickly you would respond to my response. Secondly because your logic, specifically when it applies to the Bible, gave me the best laugh I’ve had in maybe a week.

Now you may feel I was spewing, but had you paid attention you would have noted that I was responding. And responding directly to your attempt to malign all the African Americans in this nation. In fact your words fit in a slur on all Negroid people in the world.

When I dislike a comment or slur, I address the person who made it, in this case you. If you took offense to that, well then your morning coffee is working. Unlike you my posts and comments are available to the world and I do not smear whole groups of people though I do highlight wrongs but not without cause or reason.

Now I agree that you have an opinion. And as you obviously noted I did not edit or restrict it in any manner. If I highlighted it as a source of illogical thought, that is my right, and I did not force you to expose your small-mindedness. If you thought that somehow I would buckle under your thoughts of implied superiority or self-worthiness – you seriously failed to read or understand what I write. If others you speak with on these subjects agree with your bewildering misstatements and flights of fancy, well it only proves my point on how sad race relations in America really is today.

Setting aside your mob mentality justification, which is the same mentality that justified lynching and prevented that from becoming a crime where children were brought with a picnic basket until 1922, I will correct another point you try to make. There is no question of the contributions that Blacks have made to America. Had you done a simple Google search as I mentioned you would know that.

You don’t need to be “sure there are blacks that contribute to our society” since it is a fact that has existed long before there was an America. The good that Black people across the world have done is fact and even history as recorded today cannot hide that truth.

I never denied that there are Whites, Asians, Indians, Aborigines, and so on that have done good in the world. There are so many that have contributed to the benefit of Mankind. But unlike you I do not wallow in the thought that any race, ethnicity, creed or whatever is subordinated or inferior to any other. And having read facts and history I know that the above is true, it seems from your comments that you still don’t. So no, I didn’t forget but have you ever learned that?

Now for my favorite line of your comment:

“About apologizing to blacks about slavery. I will do that as soon as they apologize for enslaving the Israelites.”

First I was not addressing Ancient history, but the relative recent past of America. 400 years is not ancient, and certainly not some 2 millennia ago as your refer to.

As for the Israelites being enslaved by Egypt according to the Bible, which is the reference you seem to be making, check your facts. It seems you are presuming that the Israelites were White, which is a lie. As the Bible clearly states, Jesus was an Israelite and had hair of wool and skin of bronze. Now considering the accepted region of Jerusalem, and the description of Jesus and other Israelites I can clearly state that Jesus was not a European blonde White man. He wasn’t any kind of White, or Caucasian if you prefer, at all. Read that Bible passage again and you should realize that Jesus looks more like me than James Caviezel or Max Von Syndow. He was an Arab descendant, which means he was Negroid and therefore Black. Amazing what reading will teach you.

So in effect if any one is to apologize for the enslavement of Ancient Israelis it would be Blacks, specifically from Africa – thus you aren’t owed a word on the subject, by your own logic.

Where is my apology though? The reality of Slavery in America is well documented, as is America’s resistance to admit any past wrong. Trying to sidestep that point with your illogic does not shield you from the facts and truth. You may want to try to insult my intelligence, but please try harder at least.

Now you may indeed only know of African Americans that have succumbed to the ‘America will take care of you’ philosophy you seem fond of spouting. I can only presume that you know very few African Americans though. If you know 10 I’d be amazed. Even moreso if you actually spoke to more than 5. I bet you are the type of person that would count ‘knowing’ a person of another race or creed because you may work in the same office as them but never actually spoke to them. I could be wrong, but you strike me like the type.

Now let me pause a moment. I come from New York City. That is the most diverse place I am aware of in the world. Every culture, race, ethnicity and so on live mere blocks from one another. As such I have learned from all types of people and cultures – which have served me well in my travels across the nation and world. Because of my experiences in dozens of cities and numerous countries I can say that there is no singular type of example of a group of peoples. The educated people in the world would agree, which I do not count your statements to reflect.

My friends, whom I speak with, have lived with, have dated, and debated with are of every type of human being on the planet. They don’t agree with every position I have. They don’t accept every view I present, and can counter some views I have with equally compelling facts. And that is why I love them all. They can offer a valid, logical, opposing view and disagree with me – without trying to insult an entire race, or me. You obviously cannot.

It’s nice to know that you feel your life is full. Ignorance is bliss and all that. Except that ignorance is the lack of knowledge, and you have been given that knowledge. Thus in failing to accept that knowledge you qualify for the definition of stupid. And I suppose stupidity makes one blind, which can be as good as bliss perhaps.

But have no doubt; you are entitled to your opinion. It is a right guaranteed by the Constitution and Amendments, enforced by the blood and sweat of millions of Americans – White Americans, Black Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans and every other American since the inception of America. So don’t feel threatened because this Black Puerto Rican man is willing to tell you that if you aren’t ignorant your words do a wonderful job of making you look it. [And by the way that is my opinion – don’t like it, hit the X in the top right corner of the webpage.]

You don’t owe me anything Christy. I never said you do. In fact I have clearly stated repeatedly that your expectation that I would say such a thing is false and tunnel-visioned. I have said in various posts that America, particularly the Government, owes an apology to the descendants of the original slaves. I have said that as part of the sincerity of that apology reparation – akin to the reparations given to Asians due to WWII internment, and descendants of Native American Indians – are a positive and can be done to the benefit of the nation.

But Christy, you don’t owe me anything. Nor do you owe my mother, sisters, brothers, cousins, uncles, aunts, a 3rd cousin twice removed, the city of New York or Kansas anything. Only a mind so full of itself would assume that millions of Americans would have any idea you exist at all for no reason at all. As the saying goes, get real. Your comments annoyed me momentarily but if you think that you made a difference in my life or that of those I call friends then you are beyond self-centered, in my opinion.

I never questioned where you are in life. You have a husband and children. Whoopdeedoo for you. I didn’t ask, I don’t care. If your volunteered information does anything for me, it makes me hope your children will be more open minded and understanding than you apparently are. If you don’t like that statement then you should have left them out of it, but I am not attacking them – I am addressing you.

I’m glad you believe you earned the life you have. Your implication that I have not goes further to state your stupidity when it comes to who I am and what I do. It shows your disdain of my abilities and dislike of my success. But again, you ain’t God nor close to Him. So I really don’t care how you sleep or what you think. I didn’t ask for your opinion specifically, nor your open-ended attack on all Black people in the world. But I will not stand idle while you try to puff up your life at my expense. You found the wrong blogger.

So sleep well, try to hurl the best insults you can (and honestly I have really heard so many better ones, you could have at least worked on that a bit) and go on with your life. Never come to my blog or any post I write, or visit often and squeeze in a comment when you feel brave enough. I won’t stop you from doing either because You, Christy in Utah, are not who I hope to speak with on my blogs. You do not represent the tens of thousands that read my posts each month in over 115 countries around the world.

I write for the readers that agree or disagree with my views. I stay up late researching and reading and watching news for minds that are open and intelligent and inquisitive. I enjoy reading comments that dispute my findings and challenge my convictions. I love a respectful question, or a strong willed honest opposing view. And I cherish respect.

So Christy, you can call me bitter. You can avoid addressing the facts and views I present. You can insult me and everyone that looks even a little bit like me. You can squirm in your apparently repressed petulant stupid mind. And I’ll keep writing for those that are not like you.

And I’m eternally grateful that the people I do write for, the majority of America and the world have so little in common with you.
