Mencia, Outkast and Leary

Well there is some great news out there. Several actors and production crews have received confirmations about their shows. Of particular interest is the announcement that Mr. Carlos Mencia is going to get a 3rd season for his show. If you have not seen Mind of Mencia, on Comedy Central, I strongly suggest it. Something you should keep in mind is that he doesn’t hold punches. It’s a great thing in that he points out the failures in all peoples and cultures equally. And he is funny. I liken his humor to that of a Mr. George Carlin. Direct social commentary, that you can’t help liking. If you have a PC personality you won’t like him, everyone else should. His video making fun of kayne west was fantastic. And if you have the chance see his uncut standup special its worth the time. He is on the mark as he goes from Catholics, Black African Americans, Mexicans, the handicapped and more. It’s not a Mr. Andrew Dice Clay type of show, it’s not Mr. Eddie Murphy, it’s unique.

Another great cable network program that is getting another season is the FX show Rescue Me. Mr. Denis Leary has done a phenomenal job in his portrayal of a firefighter that survived 9/11, but still carries scars from it. And those scars have grown as he has lost others while fighting fires and his own personal demons. It’s a great look at the frailties of human beings that deal with incredible stresses. It’s a strong cast and very-well written. Definitely not for the kids. And Mr. Leary has done well enough that besides getting a 4th season, he has received an Emmy nomination. Watch the cable program once and you will see why.

On the movie front the movie Idlewild, featuring Outkast, should be out soon. I’m looking forward to this 1930's era musical. First it’s not in the normal here comes a song out of nowhere format. I tend to hate that format. Secondly all the music has been created by Outkast, and has been styled to the time period. Mr. Andre Benjamin, Andre 3000, and Mr. Antwan Patton, Big Boi, are both very creative and successful in substantivally different styles. The fact that some music will be a homage to styles and greats like Mr. Cab Calloway intrigues me. It’s also a positive that Mr. Benjamin has had movie experience, and did reasonably well in Four Brothers.

On a side note, I find it interesting how so much is rumored about the breakup of Outkast. So many find it difficult to accept that these 2 friends can have different expressions and yet work together. Friends of 20 years (I think that is correct) are not limited by the growth each achieves. They have stated, and I believe them, that they were friends first and still are. They are involved in each others family and life. Given that the reasons most musical entertainment groups end do not apply. In my own life I have 3 friends I have known for 30+ years. We are all very different in our expression and somewhat so in our views. We live some distance from each other, and do not speak on a regular basis all the time. Yet there is no question that in a moments notice any of us would give our life for the other. There has never been a time where any request from one would not be answered. And we have worked together on various projects, each contributing his own talents. Based on that I see no reason why Outkast would not continue to work together.

But back to the news at hand. Not everyone is doing well. Mr. Justin Timberlake’s movie career took another hit. Even though he was teamed with the renown Mr. Morgan Freeman, and Mr. Kevin Spacey the movie Edison Force went straight to DVD. The fact that Mr. Cary Elwes and Mr. Dylan McDermott were also in the film still could not help it. Given the horrendous review of Southland Tales, I think Mr. Timberlake should stick with his day job.

This is what I think, what do you think?
